ABOUT THE FINGER LAKES

The Finger Lakes region is rich in Native American history and legend. According to one legend, the lakes were formed when the Great Spirit laid his hands on the land to bless it. His fingers left imprints that filled with water, hence the name “Finger Lakes.” However, geology explains that over 550 million year ago, the lakes were formed during the last ice age. As glaciers crept from north to south, they carved deep slices into the earth. Gradually, the ice melted leaving valleys of water, which are now the 11 Finger Lakes.

SKANEATELES LAKE FUN FACTS

  • Skaneateles means "Long Lake"
  • For those feeling a bit tongue tied...It's pronounced "skinny-atlas"
  • The lake is 16 miles long and 1 mile across at its widest point. The average depth is 145 ft, but the maximum depth is over 300 ft. The lake holds 413 billion gallons of water and is one of the main supplies of water for the city of Syracuse.
  • Skaneateles has the highest level of clarity of any of the Finger Lakes. Its water is so pure that the city of Syracuse and other municipalities use it unfiltered.
  • The historic village of Skaneateles includes a handful of homes that were stops on the Underground Railroad.
  • William Henry Seward described Skaneateles as "the most beautiful body of water in the world."
